Hi!  I’m Maureen from thehighlysensitivechild.com

My mission is to help parents understand and appreciate their highly sensitive kids, so that they can shine!

I am a wife, writer and busy mommy to two highly sensitive little boys (6 and 9 years old). I know the challenges and joys that you are facing raising your HSCs, as I am experiencing them daily right along with you!

Raising highly sensitive children (HSCs) is amazing and arduous, fun and frustrating, challenging and rewarding. If you are anything like me, you are probably proud of your parenting skills one minute and then find yourself doubting them the next. It is a learning process. I am always looking for ways to help my kids thrive in a world that overwhelms them and I want to pass this knowledge along to help you!

I spent several years as a corporate event planner, before drastically changing my career direction to work with children in a library setting.  I received my Masters degree in Information Science with a specialization in children’s literature and worked creating and executing children’s programming, storytimes and reader’s advisory for over 10 years, before becoming a stay at home mom/writer to two wonderfully energetic and high sensitive little boys.

Becoming a mom flipped my world upside down.  My oldest son was diagnosed with Selective Mutism at age 3 and during one of my meetings with his treatment professional, I was introduced to the the term highly sensitive and Dr. Aron’s book, the Highly Sensitive Child.

It was a game changer.  It answered so many questions about my son’s behavior and mine as well.  During this process, I discovered that not only was my son a highly sensitive child, but that I was also a highly sensitive person.

I started writing a personal blog about our son’s journey with Selective Mutism in 2014.  Through his therapy, I learned some really effective ways to help my son with his worries and anxiety.  In April 2016, I created My Book of Brave, a journal to help children dealing with anxiety in their daily life.  As I began to share it with other moms, I began getting a lot of questions about the term “high sensitivity,” which I mentioned often on my blog.

I realized that I was not alone.  There were parents all over the world who were asking the same questions I was 4 years earlier.  Why does my son have trouble with loud noises?  Why are birthday parties difficult for him?  How come he can’t join in with a group of kids like other children can?  Why is he so emotional?

In December 2017, I created thehighlysensitivechild.com to help other parents who were looking for answers and understanding.

I am not a doctor or health professional who specializes in these areas, but as a mom of highly sensitive children, I have read extensively on this subject and have learned A LOT over the past several years raising HSCs that I know can benefit you & your family.

My hope is that you will find this site to be a great resource for you and that it will assure you that you are not alone on your parenting journey.  I encourage you to check out all the blog posts and resources available to you on my site and also encourage you to join the discussion with over 1,500 members in our Parents of Highly Sensitive Children FB group.
